Privacy Policy for Tesbench

Tesbench is an unofficial Android app by Matty V (independent developer). It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Tesla, Inc.

This policy describes what Tesbench does with data on your device. It is written for a small indie diagnostics app: plain and short.

What Tesbench is

Tesbench talks to your car’s powertrain CAN / OBD data through a Bluetooth ELM327-style adapter (for example OBDLink or a generic ELM327). Diagnostics run on your phone and your adapter. The app does not require an account.

Data the app stores on your device

All of the following stay on the device unless you choose to share a file:

• Settings (DataStore): options such as dual-motor, hardware filter, saved VIN, paint/wheels for optional render, pack type, and similar preferences.
• Health history (Room database): local battery/health snapshots you take in the app.
• Logs and captures (app-private storage): connection logs and .tscap.gz capture files. You can share these via the system share sheet using Android’s FileProvider; the app does not upload them by itself.

Uninstalling the app removes this on-device data (subject to how Android clears app storage).

Optional network use

Tesbench works offline for Bluetooth diagnostics. When you opt in or tap a control that needs the network, the app may contact:

1. NHTSA vPIC (vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov) — only when you tap an online VIN lookup. The VIN you entered is sent to that public API so the app can show decode fields. NHTSA’s own terms and privacy practices apply to that request.
2. Tesla static compositor images (static-assets.tesla.com) — only when “online render” is enabled and paint/wheels are set. The app requests a vehicle image URL; no Tesla account login is used. Image caching may use Coil’s on-device memory/disk cache.
3. PayPal (paypal.me/Tesbench) — only when you open Donate. That leaves the app and opens PayPal in a browser or the PayPal app. Tesbench does not process payments itself.

No other analytics, crash, or advertising SDKs are bundled for tracking.

Permissions

• Bluetooth / Nearby devices (BLUETOOTH_CONNECT, BLUETOOTH_SCAN, and on older Android, location for Bluetooth discovery): required to find and talk to your OBD adapter. Scan is declared neverForLocation.
• Internet: used only for the optional VIN lookup, optional car image fetch, and opening the Donate link.

The app does not request access to your contacts, photos library, microphone, or precise continuous location for tracking.

What we do not do

• No user accounts or cloud login for Tesbench itself.
• No ads.
• No third-party analytics or advertising SDKs.
• No sale of personal data.
• No automatic upload of CAN logs, captures, VIN, or health history to a Tesbench server (there isn’t one for this app).

Children

Tesbench is a vehicle diagnostics tool for adults who own or work on a car. It is not directed at children under 13.

Changes

If this policy changes in a material way, the effective date at the top will be updated. Continued use of the app after that date means you accept the updated policy.
